SUNAPEE, N.H. — Firefighters from 10 communities battled a third-alarm house fire at 1228 Route 11 in the Georges Mills section of Sunapee on July 25, 2026, that seriously injured one resident and killed a dog.

Sunapee Fire Department, along with automatic mutual-aid companies from New London, Newport, Springfield and Newbury, was dispatched at approximately 1:24 a.m. after multiple callers reported a structure fire. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the front and side of the two-story home.

Three occupants escaped the residence. Two were uninjured, while a third suffered serious burn injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to New London Hospital. The patient was later flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further treatment.

Firefighters initially received a report that another person might still be inside the home and searched the building before learning that person was out of town. As fire conditions worsened, Sunapee Command upgraded the incident to a third alarm, bringing additional mutual aid from Lempster, Sutton, Warner, Claremont, Lebanon and Unity.

New London Engine 1, staffed by three firefighters, established a water supply before its crew joined the fire attack. Additional personnel and water-supply resources were brought in as crews worked to contain the blaze.

A dog was later found dead inside the home, while a cat was reported missing following the fire.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office was investigating the origin and cause of the blaze.
