More than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to a three-alarm residential fire at 115A Oakside Drive in Smithtown, New York, on July 11, 2026, where heavy fire conditions, structural collapse and multiple injuries complicated operations.

The Smithtown Fire Department was the primary responding agency after the alarm was transmitted at approximately 5:54 p.m. Assistant Chief Palazzo, the first chief officer on scene, found much of the residence heavily involved and an injured 82-year-old homeowner outside the building. The man had escaped on his own and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious burns and smoke inhalation.

Companies deployed multiple handlines and master streams while dealing with a heavy fire load, rapidly deteriorating conditions and several structural collapses. The incident was escalated to three alarms, bringing extensive mutual aid and standby coverage from departments across the area.

A second resident and one firefighter suffered minor injuries and were transported for evaluation and treatment. The fire was declared under control at approximately 9:35 p.m., more than three and a half hours after the initial dispatch.

After suppression operations were completed, the scene was turned over to the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office and the Suffolk County Police Arson Section. Police later said the cause was believed to be non-criminal.
