This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire that spread through multiple residences in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, on July 14, 2026.

FDNY units were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. to 85-42 76th Street, between 85th Drive and 85th Road. The fire began in a two-story private dwelling and quickly extended to neighboring homes, ultimately involving three residences.

The response escalated to a third alarm, bringing 63 FDNY units and 192 fire and EMS personnel to the scene. Department Chief Bob Sputh said the extreme summer heat was a major factor in requesting additional personnel so crews could rotate through fireground assignments and rehabilitation more quickly.

One civilian and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. Two cats were killed in the fire. The American Red Cross also responded to assist residents affected by the blaze and provide support during the hot-weather operation.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 5:30 p.m. The cause remained under investigation.
