On June 14, the East Bridgewater Fire Department responded to a one-acre woods fire along Union Street. This was the second weekend in a row that crews had to fight a brush fire that required mutual aid.
Before forestry vehicles arrived at the location, firefighters had to hike nearly three-quarters of a mile through tough terrain using hand equipment. Using around 2,000 gallons of water, crews battled the fire for more than three hours.
While East Bridgewater personnel remained dedicated to the situation, mutual aid departments from Whitman, Hanson, and Bridgewater helped with firefighting operations and handled more medical calls. Additionally, the department encouraged locals to talk to kids about the risks of forest fires and to report any evidence of smoke right once.
