Carolina, R.I. — June 2 — Following reports of a brush fire, the Richmond-Carolina Fire District arrived in the Punchbowl Trail area. When Richmond Police arrived first, they discovered that a flaming mulch pile was the cause of the incident. As firefighters separated the mulch using a nearby backhoe, Engine 617, Brush 614, and Tanker 625 responded, enabling crews to use water to put out any hidden hot spots.
A complete overhaul is required to prevent rekindles since mulch fires can retain heat beneath the surface. No injuries were recorded, and the fire was put out before it spread to surrounding foliage. After verifying that the area was secure, crews left the scene.
