The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded to a fourth-alarm fire at a senior living facility on Heberton Avenue in Staten Island on June 9.
According to officials, firefighters discovered a fire on the roof space of the four-story, 43-unit residential complex when they arrived in just over three minutes. In order to limit the fire and find and put out hidden fire in hidden void spaces, engine companies deployed six handlines. In less than two hours, the situation was under control thanks to the response of more than 200 FDNY fire and EMS personnel. No civilian injuries were reported, although four firefighters suffered minor injuries. The American Red Cross is helping displaced occupants of fourteen top-floor units that suffered significant damage. The cause of the fire is still being looked into.
