The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 106 South Main Street at approximately 10:33 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Engine 5, Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Truck 1, Rescue 2, and Car 2 responded to the incident. Upon arrival, Engine 5 reported smoke and fire showing from the rear and side of a three-story wood-frame multi-family dwelling.

Engine 5 arrived within four minutes of dispatch, quickly located the seat of the fire, and stretched a hose line to the rear apartment. Firefighters rapidly brought the fire under control, confining it to the kitchen and dining area of the apartment. Smoke and water damage extended throughout the affected unit.

Members of Truck 2 and Rescue 2 conducted primary searches of all floors of the building, confirming that no occupants remained inside. Truck 1 assisted with utility control, ventilation, and inspection of the roof structure for fire extension.

Truck 2 performed overhaul operations. Engine 2 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and stretched a backup hose line to the fire floor. Engine 3 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Gas and electrical

utilities were secured, and the building was thoroughly ventilated. Atmospheric monitoring was conducted to ensure the structure was free of hazardous products of combustion prior to reoccupancy.

Norwalk EMS was on scene to provide firefighter rehabilitation services, while the Norwalk Police Department assisted with traffic and crowd control.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. During search operations, members of Rescue 2 located a cat inside the fire apartment and removed it from the building. Despite those efforts, the animal had succumbed to smoke inhalation and was returned to its owner.

The fire displaced two occupants, who received assistance from the American Red Cross. Occupants of the remaining three apartments were able to return to their homes.

Fire Department operations were completed at 11:48 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal's Division.
