Champlain, N.Y. — June 12 — After the incident the day before, firefighters from the Champlain Fire District returned to the scene of a barn fire to put out any hot spots that remained in big round hay bales. Departments from Vermont, Canada, and New York participated in the first response. In order to contain the fire, safeguard farm equipment, and stop the flames from spreading to a larger barn adjacent, crews had to work in extremely hot conditions.
Because heat can stay trapped deep within densely packed bales, hay fires frequently need prolonged operations. Throughout the event, Champlain-Mooers EMS gave firefighters medical attention and rehabilitation. According to department officials, the reaction showed the need of coordinated operations, mutual aid relationships, and firefighter safety during protracted emergency situations.
