Woman Dies in Fatal City of Newburgh House Fire

NEWBURGH, NY - The City of Newburgh FD responded to a structure fire with reported entrapment at 68 Lander Street on June 15th. On arrival firefighters sounded a second-alarm, bringing in West Point, Air National Guard and Castle Point to the scene. Firefighters used ground ladders and multiple hand lines to try to contain the fire. A third-alarm was sounded, bringing in Good-Will, Cronomer Valley and Cornwall on Hudson to the scene. The area around Lander and Third Street was blocked off by fire engines and ladder trucks while crews worked. Mobile Life ALS and City of Newburgh Police were also at the scene. A woman, identified as Debra Benedict, was trapped and found deceased on the third floor. Her adult son suffered burns and broken bones after jumping from a third floor window. The Orange County Medical Examiner's office was contacted, and the fire is currently under investigation.
