Gyrocopter Crashes in Jefferson County Georgia

On Friday June 8, 2012 at approx. 4:11 pm, the Jefferson 911 Center received a call stating that a Gyrocopter had crashed just North of the Wrens Airport. Emergency Responders was immediately dispatched to the area

Upon arrival at the incident location, emergency responders found what is known as a Gyrocopter in a field approx. 50 yards south of Ozier Russell Road and approx. ½ mile North of the Wrens Airport.

The aircraft was on fire and after extinguishing the flames, they found the remains of the pilot, later identified as Christopher Bowen, 54 year old male from Bluffton South Carolina in the wreckage.

Jefferson County Emergency Management was contacted and Director Jim Anderson made notification to the state and federal authorities reference the incident. Upon being notified by Director Anderson of the fatality, Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Representative responded to the scene to conduct an investigation

Investigation revealed that the victim had come in earlier that afternoon for the Wrens-O.B. Brown Memorial Fly-in which is an annual event and had assembled his aircraft and was flying the area for about 10-20 minutes prior to the crash.

Incident is currently under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office and the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Atlanta Office.
