HAMPSTEAD, NH - On the very hot and sunny afternoon of June 8th, Hampstead Fire started getting calls for a strong smell of propane in the area of the Dunkin Donuts on East Main Street and Route 111 in a shopping plaza. The first due engine reported that a valve was sheared off and product was blowing into the air. A car made a wrong turn into a parking lot and sheared off the valve on a 1000gl underground tank, sending propane into the air. Command quickly requested more manpower. Several area fire departments were requested to the scene to assist and/or cover the station. Crews were swapped out often due to high temperatures. Because the propane company was not able to remove all the product in the tank, they had to burn off the remaining product which took several hours.
