CAMDEN, NJ - It was June 1, 2025 on a sunny afternoon in Camden, NJ when people started calling in reports of heavy smoke in the area of 15th and the Admiral Wilson Boulevard, and also Federal Street and River Road.

At 3:23 P.M., the Camden Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a building on fire in that area. Camden Battalion Chief 2, Phil Tally, was first to arrive and reported a one-story vacant garage, 20' X 75', fully involved in the 1600 block of Carmen Street in an industrial area of East Camden. The one-story garage/loading dock building was nestled between a large one-story commercial building and attached to a four-story warehouse.

Engine 9 arrived and quickly went in service with a 2 1/2” attack line and their deck gun to keep the fire from spreading to the one-story commercial building (exposure D). Ladder 3 was quick to put their main ladder in service to try to keep the fire from extending into the four-story attached warehouse (exposure B).

Battalion 2, Phil Tally, placed all hands working at 3:31 P.M. At 3:38 P.M., the second-alarm was transmitted and at 3:56 P.M., the third-alarm was transmitted to assist with water supply and ladder operations. There were buildings on the C exposure that fronted the 1600 block of Mickle Street that were an immediate threat as well. Aerial ladders from Camden, Cherry Hill, and Westmont were placed to keep the fire from extending into those buildings.

The fire was contained to the original fire building and the attached four-story warehouse where the fire extended to the roof area. The fire was placed under control at 6:30 P.M. by Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax. Units remained on location for several hours after for overhaul and final extinguishment. No injuries were reported.
