WALTHAM, MA - On May 31st, Waltham’s 911 Center received numerous calls for a porch fire at 5 Rock Lane. Engines 2 and 7, Rescue 1 and Tower 1 were dispatched. Engine 4 was assigned as the RIT and Medic 1 also responded.

Captain Mike Crane of Tower 1 arrived with heavy fire on a large deck. He requested a working fire. Squad 5 then responded. Firefighters checked the house for extension but found none. The fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes. About five tires were on fire under the deck.

It was determined spontaneous combustion from oily rags caused the fire.
