At just before 0300 hours on May 29, 2026, the Camden Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a fire in the area of Ferry Avenue and Jackson Street. Responding companies updated the assignment for a fire at the EMR scarp metal junkyard located at 1400 S. Front Street. Inside the scrap yard, are large piles of scrap waiting to be shredded and prepared for recycling. First arriving units reported one of the large piles of scrap on fire. The scrap yard fire suppression system was activated, but was quickly overwhelmed. CFD units utilized a yard hydrant as well as a street hydrant almost one thousand feet away. Aerial streams were used as scarp yard personnel used heavy equipment to pull the pile apart to assist with extinguishing the fire.
