Seminole County Fire Department and Altamonte Police Department Host Special Field Trip for Altamonte Elementary School Deaf/Hard of Hearing Class

The Seminole County Fire Department and the Altamonte Police Department recently hosted a class from Altamonte Elementary School students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Eight students from kindergarten to fourth grade visited the fire and police station and had an interactive and fun time with the first responders. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters helped the students learn about fire and police and much of the tour was interactive. The half-day field trip included a lunch sponsored by Huey Magoo’s in Altamonte.


In preparation for the children arriving, the first responders practiced sign language appropriate to teaching the children. The Altamonte Police Department also had a personnel member who attended the trip who was fluent in ASL.


“The children were super engaged and had lots of questions for all of us about how the equipment works,” said Seminole County Fire Department Lieutenant Anthony Bowman. “They were so inquisitive and enthuWe were reminded by the teachers that these students are super inquisitive because many of them have not seen or been explained to what certain things are on a fire truck.
