The City of New York Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 207 Dyckman Street in Manhattan at around 12:35 a.m. on May 4.

The first level of the six-story building caught fire, according to officials, and flames quickly spread through the building's sole stairwell. Additionally, firefighters discovered that several residents were trying to flee using the building's front and rear fire escapes.

According to FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito, workers rescued those trapped above the fire while simultaneously stretching many hoselines. During what officials described as a very challenging and risky operation, the fire eventually spread to eight units on multiple stories.

Five persons were taken to hospitals in critical condition, and three were declared dead. Five civilians and one firefighter were also hurt. Around three in the morning, the three-alarm fire was contained after more than 190 fire and emergency medical personnel responded.

The department's "Close the Door" safety message was also highlighted by NY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who noted that residences with closed doors sustained noticeably less damage. The cause is still being looked into.
