The Canaan Protective Fire Company was called to Route 22 in Canaan at around 7:05 p.m. on May 12th due to a suspected hazardous materials incident involving a semi-trailer that was leaking at a truck stop.
According to officials, the Chatham Rescue Squad and the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company offered mutual aid assistance. When crews arrived on the scene, they erected a safety perimeter around the truck and verified that a hazardous substance spill had occurred. As a precaution, nearby truck drivers were moved out of the fueling and rest area in compliance with emergency response protocols.
Firefighters working in air packs coordinated with incident command and confirmed the spill conditions. The Columbia County Fire Coordinator's Office and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation offered additional assistance. The incident was later turned over to the trucking company and its contracted spill response team.
