On April 17, at around 7:15 p.m., reports of smoke emanating from wooded terrain prompted the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department and mutual aid agencies to go to the area of Hopewell Road and Chestnut Street.
When the first teams from the Geigertown Fire Company and Birdsboro-Union Fire Department arrived, they saw a visible smoke column and set up command operations. As crews from northern Chester County and southeast Berks County responded with ATVs, brush trucks, and Jeeps alongside forestry staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, officials requested a second-alarm brush fire assignment.
While attempting to contain and put out the fire, firefighters had to deal with challenging terrain, fallen trees, and dense vegetation. The fire was effectively contained to around 0.8 acres, according to officials.
The Monarch Fire Company, Gibraltar Fire Company, Twin Valley Fire Department, Exeter Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lower Alsace Fire Company, Berks Emergency Strike Team, Earl Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, and Pottstown's Good Will Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 were among the departments that provided assistance. Additionally, the agency expressed gratitude to Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue for helping with station coverage.
