The Hamden Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Grandview Avenue at around 8:45 a.m. on May 3.
When Rescue 2 arrived, the house was completely obscured by smoke. Before Engine 2 arrived and put out the remaining fire, firefighters contained a basement fire using an extinguisher. The basement was the only part of the house that was affected by the fire, according to officials, although the entire building was severely damaged by heat and smoke.
American Medical Response took one occupant to the hospital for assessment. Two dogs and two cats were saved from the house by firefighters, and Hamden Animal Control and AMR staff took care of the animals. The animals are anticipated to recover, according to officials. Smoke inhalation claimed the life of one family pet.
The American Red Cross assisted the displaced family. The Cheshire Fire Department, New Haven Fire Department, and North Haven Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident. According to the Hamden Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire began on a flat top grill after an occupant attempted to extinguish the flames before evacuating and calling 911.
