The East Putnam Fire Department, Putnam EMS, a QV Medic unit, and the Connecticut State Police responded to a single-vehicle rollover incident on Park Road at around 6:01 p.m. on April 19.
The weather prevented the helicopters from LIFESTAR and LifeFlight from flying, but dispatchers found the injuries fit air medical standards while personnel were in route.
When firefighters came, they discovered a severely damaged car lying on a fire hydrant, with the driver still inside but unharmed. The driver's injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and Putnam EMS sent him to UMass Memorial Medical Center. Day Kimball Hospital was on trauma diversion, according to officials, therefore the transit destination was altered.
The vehicle was removed by Cargill Towing, allowing Putnam WPCA crews to inspect the hydrant for damage. State Police are investigating the crash.
