On April 18, 2025, the City of Troy’s Fire Department was dispatched to 613 3rd Avenue on the second floor for a reported structure fire. The caller reported an electrical fire on the second floor. Engine one, engine four, truck one, truck two, the rescue squad, and the battalion chief responded to the scene. During the initial dispatch engine two was off duty as it cross staff's medic two, medic four was handling an EMS call and medic three was off duty as it is only staffed from 8 AM to 8 PM after the City of Troy’s administration went back to normal staffing hours even after the ambulance calls have greatly increased.
Engine one arrived on scene with nothing showing from the front of the building. Truck one pulled behind the engine company and began to set up. The officer from engine one made his way into the hallway he had a smoke condition, and he notified the dispatcher that they are investigating it further. As he made his way to the second floor and open the door, he had heavy fire in a room and notify the dispatcher to transmit the signal thirty for a working structure fire. Additional firefighters made their way inside and began to evacuate the residence on the third floor and the first floor. Firefighters deployed an inch and three-quarter hand line to the second floor and conducted a rapid search of the apartment. With the little bit of oxygen that the fire received it quickly grew into its incipient stage and was visible on the bravo side of the structure in the window.
Firefighters were able to successfully get everybody out of the structure and firefighters on the second floor knocked down the fire condition quickly and began to vent the window. Firefighters conducted overhaul in the fire room. As they were doing so one Troy firefighter sustained a injury and came outside where firefighters bandaged his arm up and due to no ambulance available to take the firefighter to the hospital the firefighter was transported to the hospital via a command staff vehicle. Firefighters continued to conducting overhaul on the second floor and fire investigators began to investigate the incident. Firefighters assisted the occupants of the structure with getting their pets out of the building and making sure they were safe.
The fire is under investigation at this time and the injured firefighter was transported to Samaritan Hospital and was unable to return back to work on his normal scheduled shift that night. No further injuries occurred and all of the occupants in the building were accounted for. The Troy firefighter that was injured has returned back to work since this article has been posted.
