JERSEY CITY, NJ - A small program is underway in Jersey City that involves some 14 students from Lincoln High School. It's called the Police and Fire Program, run by the Board of Education.
Under the supervision of one of their teachers, Ms. Robinson, they have been learning how their local police and fire departments operate, and their duties. They are all students with a sincere interest in public safety, and may be looking at same as a career.
The fire department liaison is Firefighter Oscar Chiluisa. He has been setting up classes and field trips to various fire department facilities.
On March 29th, they participated in a field trip to the Gong Club's new home on Summit Avenue, where they received a lesson on rehabilitation at the scene of emergencies. Gong Club member Jim Fay conducted a class on the functions of rehabilitation after firefighters battle a fire in extreme cold or extreme heat. The students also received some hands-on instructions on the canteen truck, itself.
The function of the Gong Club was explained to the group. It is a group of volunteers, from all walks of life, with an interest in the Fire Service. Some may be active or retired police officers or firefighters. Many, however, are not employed in a public safety position, but have a will to help others. It's something that, as Fay said, is in your blood.
It was explained to the class that all members are volunteers, that help out when they have time to offer. No one gets a paycheck, and there is no profit. The club exists on donations, as it has for over 70-years.
The group showed interest in the visit and in public safety, in general. They were looking forward to their next “road trip”, which was set for the HazMat company.
