BERLIN, VT — April 11th — A structure fire in East Barre prompted the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, located at 338 Paine Turnpike North, to provide mutual help. Barre Town and other on-site departments received assistance from Berlin Engine 3, Tanker 1, Utility 2, and an eight-person crew. Under a single command structure, crews helped with fireground chores, maintained a water supply, and supported fire assault operations. In a region with few hydrants, tanker operations were used to keep the water flowing.
Due to staffing and water supply requirements, numerous agencies are frequently needed for structural fires in rural areas. Additionally, ongoing calls in nearby areas are covered by mutual help units. During working fires, regional collaboration is seen in the coordinated response.
