Crews Quickly Contain Vehicle Fire on US 15 Northbound

Gettysburg, PA - Units were dispatched to US 15 northbound for a reported vehicle fire. Engine 1-2 arrived first and found a Honda Civic with a fully involved engine compartment. The crew blocked the slow lane, established command, and used the bumper line to extinguish the fire.

Because the incident occurred just beyond a curve, fire police were requested to shut down US 15 northbound at the York Road interchange for safety.

Engine 1-1 arrived shortly after, blocking the fast lane while fire police from Gettysburg and Barlow completed the highway closure. With the fire knocked down and overhaul underway, Engine 1-1 was released to respond to another call. Engine 1-2 cleared the scene once the fast lane was reopened, while fire police remained to assist Pennsylvania State Police with traffic control.

A brief investigation determined that rodents had built a nest inside the vehicle’s engine compartment, igniting the fire. Two of the animals did not survive the incident.
