150 Acres burn in Hernando Beach

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Late afternoon a fire broke out in the Withlacoochee Forest Center. With high winds that afternoon, the fire broke out threatening resident's and businesses on the east side of Shoal Line Road were under mandatory evacuation orders. The fire moved very quickly consuming everything in it's path. Business owners were on the roof's of their establishments with hoses attempting to put out embers that were flying all over with the canal behind them, hoping the fire wouldn't jump over. A few few fires outside that perimeter did get brush fires from the flying embers away from the large fire area.

Fire crews from Hernando, Pasco County as well as the Florida Forest Service and the Withlacoochee Forestry Center were on hand with fire apparatus and bulldozers. Due to the high winds the services could not get water planes to help out.

It was determined that 150-acres were on fire and by 0647 on the 30th it was 40% contained with no structures being threatened. Fire crews remained on scene over the next few days making sure it was fully under control
