On March 11th, the Hamden Fire Department responded to a small domestic fire caused by a laptop charger that was linked to a backup battery pack.
According to fire officials, the battery pack overheated as a result of thermal runaway, a rapid chain reaction triggered by high temperatures, overcharging, damage, or internal faults. Overheating caused the nearby carpet to burn. A loud popping sound from the battery pack aroused a teen in the house, allowing the problem to be detected immediately.
Residents were cautioned by firefighters to use chargers and cords approved by the manufacturer and to avoid charging gadgets on soft surfaces such as beds, sofas, or cushions. Charge devices in well-ventilated areas, inspect cords for damage, and unplug chargers when not in use.
