Mutual Aid Coverage Provided by Berwick Fire Department

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Berwick, ME — March 28th — While local fire departments battled a fourth-alarm building fire in the neighborhood, Engine 3 of the Berwick Fire Department was tasked with covering the Town of Wakefield, New Hampshire. While Wakefield Fire and mutual aid units remained dedicated to the prolonged incident, the Berwick engine moved to Wakefield to provide station coverage and maintain fire and EMS response capacity. Large building fires that spread to many alarm levels frequently call for a large number of workers and equipment, requiring resources from multiple nearby agencies.

Such coverage assignments are typical in northern New England. In order to maintain emergency protection while crews work at significant incidents, departments relocate available equipment into other areas. Until local businesses started to leave the fourth-alarm scene, Engine 3 was still available in Wakefield.
