Rockland, ME - Authorities expressed appreciation for the community’s patience after Rockland Street remained closed for approximately 6.5 hours following an overturned commercial truck incident earlier in the day. The driver was able to self-extricate and received an on-scene medical assessment.
Emergency crews promptly established a safety perimeter and coordinated with the truck company’s operations manager, who supplied critical details regarding the vehicle, its cargo, and safety protocols for responders and nearby residents. Crews continued to monitor the situation closely and provided timely updates throughout the response.
The trailer was confirmed to be carrying liquid nitrogen. Officials reported that no explosive concentrations were detected and no environmental hazards were present. Vapors were safely dispersing, posing no risk to crews operating at a distance. The trailer’s built-in safety mechanism enabled controlled venting, effectively preventing pressure buildup.
After assessment by the company’s Transport Manager and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, it was determined that the safest course of action was to allow the liquid nitrogen to evaporate completely before uprighting the tank.
Officials extended their gratitude to the 15 Rockport firefighters who assisted with road closures and cleanup efforts, as well as to supporting agencies including the Rockport Police Department, Messer, State Police Commercial Vehicles, Auto Master Towing, All Directions Towing, Maine DEP, and KRCC dispatchers. Their coordinated efforts ensured the incident was handled safely and efficiently.
