Providence, RI — March 1st — In order to assist firemen responding to a reported working building fire, Canteen 4 of the Special Signal Fire Association/Providence Canteen arrived at Malvern Road in Brockton. When the canteen unit was asked to help, Brockton Fire Department companies were on the scene performing overhaul and suppression operations. In order to offer rehabilitation and support services to firefighters rotating out of the fireground, Canteen 4 established up close to the area of the incident.
Rehabilitation support is a crucial component of prolonged incidents because working fires in Brockton usually include several engine and ladder companies in addition to command personnel. While teams attempted to contain the situation and finish overhaul operations, the canteen unit's presence helped guarantee that firemen had access to rest and refreshment.
