Bridgewater, VT - On Monday 09 March 2026 around 7:07 am morning, Bridgewater Fire, Bridgewater Fast Squad, and Woodstock Ambulance were dispatched to 6873 US Route 4 following reports of a vehicle that had gone off the road and rolled into the Ottauquechee River. Initial information indicated that the occupant had exited the vehicle but remained in the water.
Bridgewater Fire requested assistance from Woodstock Fire for their cold water rescue equipment. Upon arrival, first responders found that the sole occupant had successfully self-extricated from the vehicle exited the water, and was taking shelter in a passerby’s vehicle to stay warm.
Woodstock Ambulance and Bridgewater Fast Squad evaluated the driver at the scene; however, the individual declined transport to a medical facility.
Bridgewater Fire was assisted by Killington Fire, which provided a ladder to help access the vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered by Sabil and Sons Towing.
Officials extended their thanks to all responding agencies, as well as Bridgewater Highway, which sanded the roadway prior to the arrival of the Agency of Transportation (AOT), as the area of Route 4 was affected by black ice conditions.
