Rapid Response by Waterville Fire Department Saves Victim in Structure Fire

Waterville, ME - The Waterville Fire Department responded to a reported building fire at 29 Washington Street on the evening of Thursday, March 5, 2026. The initial alarm was received at 7:03 PM, with first units arriving on scene within five minutes at 7:08 PM. Upon arrival, crews observed visible flames on the first floor through a porch window, confirming a working structure fire.

As firefighters prepared to initiate operations, neighbors alerted them to a possible victim trapped inside near the front entrance. Crews quickly located and removed the individual from the first floor while simultaneously launching an aggressive interior fire attack. The victim was transported by Delta Ambulance and later airlifted by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center; their condition remains unknown.

Firefighters successfully contained the blaze to the room of origin, preventing further spread. However, the residence sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage, rendering it uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal, and any additional inquiries are being directed to their office.

The department acknowledged the support of its mutual aid partners, including Delta Ambulance, Winslow Fire Department, Oakland Fire Rescue, Fairfield Benton Emergency Services, and the Waterville Police Department.

The thoughts of the Waterville Fire Department remain with the victim and their family during this difficult time.
