HILLSBORO, NH - A Hillsboro fire officer called in by radio a working fire at a three-story apartment building on Saturday afternoon, March 23rd, reporting flames from the second and third floors. The Hillsboro fire department, along with automatic mutual aid was dispatched at 4:40 P.M. to 13 Myrtle Street.
Heavy fire was showing from the rear of the building and all residents had evacuated safely from the six-unit apartment house. A second-alarm was dispatched at 4:49 P.M., bringing in additional fire departments, along with Concord's Tower Ladder.
Several inches of snow had fallen all morning and had changed to heavy rain and ice. "The weather hampered us," said Hillsboro Fire Chief Kenneth Stafford, Jr. It took firefighters four hours to battle the flames before it was brought under control.
The fire is believed to have started on the building's third-floor and left some damage on each floor, plus significant damage to the attic and roof. Its cause remains under investigation.
