BALDWIN, NY — March 4th — A van started spilling fuel into the road on Bayfront Drive between Colony Drive and North Drive, prompting the Baldwin Fire Department to respond to a hazardous materials incident. As they worked to contain the spill and stop petroleum from getting into neighboring storm drains, firefighters came and secured the area. Coordination with the Nassau County Police Department, Town of Hempstead Bay Constables, Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office, and Nassau County HazMat Team was part of the response.
To stop the leak and make the road safe, crews deployed spill control equipment and absorbent materials. Because of the potential for environmental damage and fire concerns, fuel spills are handled carefully. While emergency personnel were working, homeowners and drivers were advised to stay away from the area.
