MOHRSVILLE, PA - Central Berks Fire Co. was dispatched at 12:44 a.m. on March 19th for a tractor trailer in a ditch at 3291 Irish Creek Rd. Crews arrived to find a slightly different scene. A tank truck carrying 7,000-gallons of fresh milk had crashed off the roadway, through a thicket of trees, down a steep 35-foot embankment, coming to rest just next to the Irish Creek. The end of the trailer was sticking out, blocking the road.
After treating the driver and handing him off to EMS and closing the road, the company took actions to mitigate the leaking tank of milk by deploying booms into the creek. The company had another tank truck on scene around one hour after dispatch to pump off what they could and stopping the leak. V&M Towing arrived on scene and began the removal process, which took the next eight hours.
Around 10:00 a.m., the responding tank truck was able to finish pumping off the remainder of the milk once the trailer was on level ground. The company then finished mitigation of the hazmat concerns of milk into a waterway by diluting the milk on the ground and what little had made its way into the creek, finally returning to station around 11:30 a.m.
