GENEVA, NY — February 17th — The City of Geneva Fire Department's firefighters helped the City of Geneva Department of Public Works with a winter maintenance problem brought on by an ice jam on a building's roof. Red Shift members accessed the roof and cleared ice buildup that was obstructing regular drainage using a ladder truck. A tiny leak had started within the building due to the ice jam. In order to safely remove the obstruction and restore appropriate runoff, firefighters collaborated with DPW staff.
In the Finger Lakes region, ice dams frequently occur during the winter months when melting snow refreezes along gutters and roof edges. Because aerial equipment can safely reach difficult-to-reach elevated sites, fire departments are frequently requested to assist municipal crews.
