February 27, 2026 — Firefighters from Gainesville Fire Rescue and Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at the Spyglass Apartments, located at 701 SW 62nd Boulevard, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a residential unit within the complex. During the incident, one resident was unable to exit the apartment and climbed out of a window onto the roof to escape the smoke and flames. Firefighters quickly located the individual and safely rescued them from the roof. No injuries were reported. As a result of the fire, three residents were displaced from their homes. Incident Commander Nick Gonzalez commended responding crews for their rapid and coordinated actions in bringing the situation under control and ensuring the safety of occupants. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials also reminded residents that cooking remains one of the leading causes of home fires and urged the public to remain attentive while cooking, keep flammable materials away from stovetops, and to evacuate immediately and call 911 if a fire occurs.
