March 4, 2026 — The City of Vergennes Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in a barn located in the West Ferrisburgh district shortly before 5:00 p.m. Upon dispatch at 16:59, command requested mutual aid from the Addison Volunteer Fire Department and the Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department while crews were en route. The first arriving officer reported no visible fire from the exterior, though occupants stated there had been heavy smoke inside an upstairs area with limited access. Engine 1 arrived with a full crew in under three minutes and deployed a dry line to the access point while firefighters entered the structure with a water can to investigate. Crews quickly determined that the smoke condition had been caused by burnt food on a stovetop that had previously ignited, and no active fire remained. Firefighters ventilated the space and checked for any possible fire extension before clearing the scene. No injuries were reported and the structure sustained no damage. The response included Engine 1, Tanker, Hose Reel, Tower, Utility 2, and a total of 22 firefighters. Support agencies included the Shelburne Communications Center and the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.
