Campton, NH - On March 3 2026 in the dark and stormy night, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue, Woodstock Fire Department, NH, and the Thornton New Hampshire Police Department responded to a reported chimney fire in Thornton.

Engine 4 responded from the station, while Ambulance 2 responded from Plymouth, having just cleared a previous medical emergency at the hospital. En route, Engine 4 received an update from Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid dispatchers that a Thornton Police Officer on scene reported visible smoke in the residence. The response was upgraded to a “Smoke in the Building” call, with Plymouth Fire-Rescue added.

Upon arrival, crews found a working chimney fire contained to the flue. Firefighters emptied the woodstove and chimney cleanout while the ladder truck accessed the chimney and dropped a chimney chain to dislodge burning material from the flue walls. Crews simultaneously checked for fire extension and monitored air quality, including carbon monoxide levels. Once the chimney was clear and no hazards were detected, crews cleared the scene.

The Plymouth engine was canceled prior to arrival, as the situation was under control. No injuries were reported.

Authorities reminded residents to ensure working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and to clean chimneys at least annually. Households burning more wood than usual may require more frequent cleaning.
