A head-on crash in Selkirk closes a portion of Route 9W during the arctic plunge in temperatures earlier in February.

Emergency crews were called to Route 9W at the intersection with Church Road in Selkirk for a head-on crash around 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, February 4th.

Selkirk Fire, Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, Albany County Paramedics and Bethlehem Police responded to the crash.

The drivers of both vehicles, as well as a passenger, were complaining of injuries upon the arrival of first responders, according to a statement from Sgt Michael Whiteley of Bethlehem Police.

“Through investigation it was determined that a 2020 Chrysler being driven by an 80-year-old male from Albany was traveling south on Route 9W when it took a left turn onto Church Road in front of a 2011 Volkswagen being driven by a 68-year-old female from Selkirk that was traveling north on Route 9W, causing the crash,” Whiteley said.

He says there was a 61-year-old passenger in the front seat of the Chrysler.

Two of the patients were transported to Albany Medical Center and one was transported to St. Peter’s Hospital, all of which had non life-threatening injuries, Whiteley said.

“The operator of the Chrysler was ticketed for failure to yield the right-of-way on a left turn as well as an uninspected motor vehicle,” Whiteley said.

Route 9W was closed in both directions from Creble Road to Jericho Road until the roadway could be cleared.
