This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

SHIRLEY, NY - On a Friday afternoon in February, the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated at about 12:45 P.M. for a report of an automatic alarm at Lidl Grocery.

Brookhaven FD chiefs quickly responded and on arrival, store employees advised that something was on fire in the store. The chief confirmed that there was an active fire and requested that Suffolk FRES reactivate for a working fire and start mutual aid to the scene.

The first due engine crew went to work streatching a line into the building where they found food shelf cases on fire in what appeared to be a gas-fed fire. Mutual aid engines and crews arrived a short time later and assisted with bringing the fire under control and ventilating the store.

Mastic, Mastic Beach, Center Moriches and Yaphank Fire Departments assisted on scene and with coverage to stand by. Shirley Ambulance was also on scene for firefighter rehab. The scene was later turned over to the Brookhaven Fire Marshal's office.
