MOONACHIE, NJ - A smoky fire that may have been sparked by a smoldering piece of foam was kept in check by sprinklers and doused by firefighters at a plant in Moonachie. At 5:01 PM on February 27th, the Moonachie Fire Department was dispatched to 1 State Street for a reported water flow alarm.

“The first arriving police officer reported heavy smoke coming from the building. As first-due units arrived, they immediately transmitted a second alarm, bringing additional fire units to the scene from surrounding towns,” the Moonachie Fire Department reported.

The building was a one-story structure on State Street at Woodbridge Inoac USA, which manufactures polyurethane foam for air filtration, sound insulation, and medical applications. The sprinkler system was activated, and lines were stretched to feed the system as crews began an aggressive interior attack, using multiple handlines to knock down the main body of fire.

“Additional alarms were transmitted, bringing more mutual aid to the scene to assist with ventilation and overhaul. Once the fire was knocked down, companies rotated through rehab. Members operated forklifts in the building to move foam product around to complete extinguishment. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” the Moonachie Fire Department reported.

Mutual aid at the scene and for coverage included firefighters from Carlstadt, Rutherford, Ridgefield Park, East Rutherford, Wood-Ridge, Little Ferry, South Hackensack, Wallington, Hasbrouck Heights, and Hackensack. Companies covering Moonachie headquarters came from Rochelle Park, Garfield, and Maywood.

Paramus Company 3 was special-called for its ventilation trailer fan to assist in clearing smoke from the building. The Moonachie First Aid & Rescue Squad and the Department of Public Works also assisted on scene.
