Litchfield, CT - Litchfield Fire, along with Bantam Fire for tanker support and Torrington Fire for RIT coverage, were dispatched to a reported basement fire on Norfolk Road at 5:35 PM. While en route, dispatch updated units that a cat was still inside the residence.
Upon arrival, first-in crews confirmed a working fire with smoke showing, prompting a full response from Bantam Fire and additional support from Northfield Fire and East Litchfield Fire for town coverage. Litchfield Ambulance (LVA) was also requested for standby.
Crews quickly divided operations: one team advanced a hose line into the basement, which had moderate heat and zero visibility, while another team conducted a search of the first floor for the cat. One cat was safely rescued and handed over to EMS for care.
Firefighters successfully contained the fire to the basement and identified leaking oxy-acetylene tanks that were complicating suppression efforts. The bulk of the fire was knocked down by 6:15 PM. Following an extensive overhaul and cleanup, all units cleared the scene around 9:00 PM.
One occupant was transported to the hospital by LVA. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Litchfield Fire Marshal’s Office.
