Alton Fire Department Announces Hiring Process for Lieutenant Position

February 21, 2026 — The Alton Fire Department has announced it is now accepting applications for the position of Lieutenant, seeking an experienced and motivated fire service professional to join its leadership team. Department officials stated that A-EMT or Paramedic certification is preferred for the role, which offers a starting pay range of $28.50 to $33.45 per hour depending on qualifications. The position follows a 1-1-1-5 schedule across A, B, C, and D shifts. Alton Fire & Rescue operates as a progressive combination department covering approximately 82 square miles and serves a year-round population of roughly 6,000 residents, a number that increases significantly during the summer season. Minimum qualifications include current CPAT certification or eligibility for lateral transfer, Pro-Board Firefighter II, Nationally Registered A-EMT certification, a minimum of five years of full-time experience as a firefighter/EMT, and Fire Officer I certification.
