The Antioch Volunteer Fire Department is sharing vital fire safety information to assist folks understand how fires originate and how to put them out. Firefighters warn the population that fire requires four essential elements to survive: heat, fuel, oxygen, and a chemical reaction. This is known as a fire tetrahedron. Removing any of these ingredients can put out a fire.

Cooling a fire using water reduces the heat. Smothering removes oxygen. Starving a fire eliminates fuel. Certain types of extinguishers have the ability to stop the chemical reaction. Officials added that knowing these fundamentals can help people react properly in an emergency. Firefighters also stress the importance of prevention, including working smoke alarms, safe cooking practices, and having a home escape plan. Departments encourage residents to practice safety and call 9-1-1 immediately if a fire occurs. Early action and awareness can help save lives and protect property.
