Quick Knockdown Reported at Mile Marker 23

January 23rd — Wells, ME — Around 1:32 p.m., the Wells Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire on the Maine Turnpike northbound around Mile Marker 23. Engine 3, Tank 2, the Chief, and Wells EMS all responded, and smoke could be seen for several miles away. A station recall was asked to ensure coverage. Crews arrived to discover a fully involved SUV in the breakdown lane. Firefighters used a 1¾-inch handline and swiftly applied water to the fire. Tank 2 supplied Engine 3, and Maine State Police stopped two lanes to protect responders. The fire was brought under control in roughly 20 minutes. There were no injuries recorded. Ogunquit Fire maintained station coverage until off-duty members arrived. Officials commended Wells EMS, Maine State Police, Ogunquit Fire Department, and Maine Turnpike Authority personnel for their assistance and coordination.
