HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ - On Wednesday, February 5th, at approximately 7:46 p.m., the Amwell Valley Fire Company was dispatched to Box 48-47 for a large animal rescue after a horse became unable to stand on a snow-covered incline. Units from 48 Fire, 48 Rescue, and 49 Rescue with its Heavy Rescue, along with the family’s veterinarian, responded quickly to the scene.
Crews arrived to find the horse lying on its side in icy conditions, presenting a challenging and time-sensitive situation. Working carefully and in coordination, rescuers utilized specialized lifting straps and manual effort to slide the animal up the slight slope to a safer position. After being down for more than 30 minutes, the horse was methodically rolled onto its opposite side to improve circulation and positioning. Following several attempts and close monitoring, the horse successfully regained its footing.
The New Jersey State Police assisted as the animal was safely led back into the barn by its owner. Fire officials praised the teamwork and calm execution of the rescue, highlighting the importance of specialized training and inter-agency cooperation in large animal emergencies.
