CAMBRIDGE, MA - Two alarms were requested for Box 2-461, at a five-story brick and wood multiple home located at 1137 Massachusetts Avenue, by the Cambridge Fire Department on January 25th. While building water supplies and advancing attack lines, businesses evacuated occupants. Fire spread into the cockloft from a lower floor via a light shaft and hidden passageways.
In order to access the hidden fire, crews had to open walls and ceilings. They also conducted overhaul and ventilation. The fire was easily contained in spite of the frigid weather. There were a few reported non-life-threatening injuries. A number of residents were temporarily relocated, and two residents were taken for assessment. Deputy Chief R. Walsh oversaw the operations of Groups 1 and 4. The cause is still being looked into.
