Diesel Spill Contained After Thruway Truck Accident

Canaan, NY — January 15th —The Canaan Protective Fire Company responded to an auto accident involving property damage on the westbound Thruway near the B2 exit as part of mutual aid. Columbia County 911 initially dispatched the East Chatham Fire Company, with Canaan and Red Rock Volunteer Fire Companies assisting. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an active fuel leak from a tractor-trailer, resulting in an estimated 80 gallons spilled. East Chatham Car 2 assumed command. Firefighters used hand tools, absorbent materials, and containment areas to keep gasoline from spreading. The Columbia County Fire Coordinator's Office requested the county Hazmat Team and a spill response trailer, to which the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded. Traffic was restricted to a single lane. The incident is being investigated by the New York State Police Troop T.
