On January 21, at 1:06 a.m., the Binghamton Fire Department responded to the Citgo gas station at 28 Exchange Street after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a fire behind the building. Arriving firefighters discovered a tiny storage facility linked to the rear of the building completely engulfed in flames, which had spread to the larger structure's attic. Firefighters swiftly extinguished the external fire, forced entrance, and removed ceiling tiles and drywall to access the attic level. The fire damage was limited to an 8-by-4-foot area in the peaked attic.

Crews worked in single digit cold and ice conditions. There were no injuries recorded. The Broome County Office of Emergency Services, the Binghamton Police Department, Superior Ambulance Service, and NYSEG all gave assistance.
