Winchendon, MA — February 3rd — North Central Massachusetts is still experiencing winter conditions, so the Winchendon Fire Department issued a public safety reminder. The ice thickness on ponds, lakes, and rivers is variable and subject to sudden changes, officials said, despite the recent cold weather. Even when adjacent regions seem solid, ice can be weakened by water currents, springs, inflows, and changing weather patterns.
Residents were cautioned by fire officials not to enter frozen streams until the ice conditions had been thoroughly examined. Because ice is frequently thinner near drains, inlets, and running water, extra vigilance is advised. Additionally, the department advises wearing a life jacket while near frozen water and keeping kids and pets off the ice. Officials emphasize that if someone falls through the ice, they should call 911 right away and not try to save them.
